Quilting for comfort, giving with heart

The Comfort Society committee is the Guild’s way of showing up for the Sunshine Coast community. For over 35 years, members have been creating handmade quilts and donating them to people going through difficult times: patients in hospitals, families in hospice care, individuals supported by emergency services, and families facing crisis. And a quilt has been provided to every baby born on the coast since 2013!

Every comfort quilt starts as donated fabric and volunteer time. Members cut, piece, and quilt together, turning raw materials into something warm and personal. The quilts are given freely, with no conditions and no expectations. It is one of the most meaningful things the Guild does … and we hear that often from appreciative recipients and organizations in the community.

Every Resource Day, Guild volunteers bring out fabrics and batting for members to take home to piece together for a quilt pattern that they choose . Quilters can opt to complete all the project steps themselves or get assistance if preferred (e.g. long-arm quilting). On another Resource Day, the quilter returns it to Comfort Society volunteers who label and register the quilt into inventory for assignment to a recipient according to to their needs (e.g. size, colour, design). Lots of steps, each one with dedication and purpose.

The Comfort Society Committee also creates quilts for other Sunshine Coast organizations to use in their own fundraising efforts (e.g. as a raffle prize).
